P.A.T Dog Fun Day

On Sunday 30th September P.A.T's Teesside and Darlington held a Companion Dog Show and Fun Day held at the Dogs Trust at Sadberge near Darlington, this proved to be an ideal location for the event this was the first event organised in the area and the first I have ever organised . The weather was very nice on the day, we also had lots of enquieries regarding P.A.T. with interest from prospective new volunteers and their dogs. All the volunteers did an excellent job throughtout the day with car parking duties, running tombola's and inflating balloons etc, the balloon race was the major fund raising event. Good profits were made from the three tombola type stands, which were run by our volunteers Margaret Lincoln, Pat Nash and Lynn Robinson with the ladies providing and paying for all their prizes.

The catering also proved very successful, we can not thank and praise the ladies from the Volunteers of the Dogs Trust enough for their support and hard work on P.A.T. behalf on the day.

The judge for the show was Mrs Pat Wardale from Darlington who had an entry of 78 dogs making a total entry of 179, there were four pedigree classes and six noventy classes. There was a display of Healwork to Music, unfortunatly the P.A.T. dog and Dogs Trust Parade had to be cancelled due to a lack of time.

At the end of the day the volunteers were very pleased with the success of the day, our first venture into fund raising in Teesside raised £681.18 for the charity. We are all looking forward to next years event which we will be starting to plan over the next few months.

Blackpool Illuminations

White Chaple Farm Camp Site in Borrowdale.

Our Holiday with the Caranex - Yes Camping!

What's a Caranex?

A unique vehicle tent - a "car annex" to exploit the space and convenience of your personal transport, whether saloon, hatch, estate, van, 4X4 or MPV. It fits easily and quickly and is freestanding too. One model covers virtually all cars from Fiat 500 to Mercedes estate, while a range of heavy duty models fit compact and medium range vans and 4X4's, including all Land Rovers, Range Rovers and Discoveries, MPV's such as the Espace etc., and many more hi-top campers. Since first introduced in the 1970's, as a functional, multi-purpose vehicle accessory, over 5000 have been sold worldwide. It is on The Design Centre Index, a worthwhile indication of it's workmanship, value and usefulness.

When can it be used?

Any time - it's versatile as plain shelter from the elements, back-up accommodation for a night away, or base for more extensive travelling....and ready for use within minutes, (the record is 4.5!). Easy to erect, even single handed, and firmly attached over the back of the host vehicle, it gives immediate through-access via rear hatch or door, which can still be opened or closed, giving secure and useable extra space under one roof. A flexible skirt along the rear bumper and a sewn-in groundsheet ensure a dry floor area seating four, or room for twin camp beds with additional sleeping space in many vehicles with fold-down seats. With 6'4" headroom over the working area and ample space for a full size trestle table, it's a decent sized workshop or office. Somewhere to live, sleep or work, it makes life easier "on the road".

Touring at home or abroad

The economical way to stretch the range of journeys further afield as, for example, travelling through Europe where camp sites are well documented, increasingly plentiful, and civilised alternatives to indifferent or scarce accommodation.

Dog Show Win!

Well I entered my little Jessie into her first ever dog show! It was just as a bit of Fun at the PATS dogs show held today, we entered four classes and came second in the dog the judge would most like to take home! It was a long afternoon for Jessie and we did it for fun, but most of the other people were quite serious. So we may enter some classes to work on our show skills, think its more for me than Jessie, but we all had a fab afternoon.

Poorly Poppy

Hi, just an update on poppy! Many of you will know poppy has been lossing her sight for the past 12 month, it has got worse over the last couple of weeks. The vet has given us some drops to put in her eyes, however this is only a limited measure and the he has suggested that the removal of her eye maybe the only alternative, of course this brings other problems as she also has a heart murmer! Poor pops!!!

Pets as Therapy (PAT) is a national charity founded in l983. It is unique in that it provides therapeutic visits to hospitals, hospices, nursing and care homes, special needs schools and a variety of other venues by volunteers with their own friendly, temperament tested and vaccinated dogs and cats. Since it’s beginning over 18,000 dogs have been registered into the PAT scheme. Every year some of these retire and new dogs, having first been examined and passed on health, temperament, suitability and stability grounds, join Pets As Therapy.Today there are currently around 3,500 active PAT visiting dogs and 90 cats at work in the UK. Every week these calm friendly dogs and cats give more than 100,000 people, both young and old, the pleasure and chance to cuddle and talk to them. The bedsides that are visited each year number a staggering half million.

Sick patients often feel isolated and even the most withdrawn seem to open up and let the barriers down when their regular PAT visiting dog is around. These dogs bring everyday life closer and with it all the happy associations for them of home comforts. The constant companionship of an undemanding animal, that gives unconditional love, is often one of the most missed aspects of their lives. PAT was formed to help make this loss more bearable and speed recovery.Research continues to validate the very real value of this daily work undertaken in the community by voluntary PAT visitors and their dogs that work amongst those of us most in need of a little extra boost in addition to medical skills and nursing care.Once new visitors have passed their dogs through the assessment and health check procedure and each has come forward with two character references, their local Area Co-ordinator or allocated contact waits to be contacted to activate the visiting process. This hard working team of volunteers throughout the UK keep in regular contact with a designated number of PAT dogs and cats and their owners. The Area Co-ordinators are in turn supported by Regional Directors and they maintain regular contact with every unit in their region, which PAT dogs already visit. They also hold the list of establishments keen to be matched with a suitable new recruit when one becomes available.

This is a community led charity, which very much thinks nationally but acts locally, particularly in respect of vital fund raising activities. Not every dog can be a PAT dog and not every dog owner has the time to undertake regular hospital visits. However, the charity is working hard on a day-to-day basis to recruit and register more suitable dogs, and their volunteer owners, to swell numbers and meet demand. Pets As Therapy’s Circle of Friends help to involve people who don’t have suitable pets but would like to be involved. PAT Junior Club encourages children and young adults to become involved with and learn about our work in the community and responsible ownership in a fun way. We are in the process of setting in place research to further validate the very real health benefits these animals bring daily into the lives of those people who are ill or disabled.

All PAT dogs and cats are required to pass an assessment to check their temperament by PAT accredited assessors, qualified vets and vet nurses and to be fully vaccinated or homoeopathically protected, wormed and protected against fleas. Records are required by the charity and each volunteer is bound to send copies when boosters have been givenEach PAT dog has an identifying tag on its collar and many of them wear a distinctive yellow coat. The owner has a photo ID badge which is worn for security at all times when visiting. Pets As Therapy have introduced a photo ID tag for its PAT Dogs & Cats as well. As the largest charity of its type in Europe, Pets As Therapy recognises that security needs are paramount and that busy authorities and on duty staff alike, need the reassurance of a therapeutic supportive service which is problem free.
